LYF at Rosebud
Every Tuesday and Thursday, the cheerful hellos from some of our best volunteers can be heard as they exit the LYF van and walk over to the picnic table to learn the day’s task.
Learning your Function (LYF) is an adult day training facility staffed with educated adults that service individuals with disabilities. LYF provides a place where they can learn life skills, independent choice making, and environment specific learning by maximizing a quality of life approach. And every Tuesday and Thursday, they come to Rosebud.
“People with disabilities are just as worthy as those without disabilities to live happy, productive lives.”
Our connection and partnership with LYF inc. started through Coach Vicky King, who has worked with Special Olympic athletes for 37 years. LYF first started coming to Rosebud during the early months of the pandemic, in May 2020, when they were looking for an outdoor space to conduct activities while still being safe from the virus. It has now been 5 years and Rosebud is happy to provide a place where they can develop various life skills. But mainly, we’re immensely grateful for all the work they do and have done over the years!
Today, we can say how invaluable the work our LYF volunteers do weekly is. They help us weed our food forests, water our plants, plant flowers and trees, feed the animals, transplant cuttings, and so much more! Additionally, the experience of working hand-in-hand with them has been even more enriching for our staff.
See what some of them have said:
“I love working with LYF each week! Not only are they excellent volunteers, but it’s rewarding to develop friendships with them as regular volunteers. LYF is full of life and their energy brings a lot of fun to Rosebud!”
“Through weekly hands-on learning experiences at this sustainability-focused eco-science center, our students have developed essential life skills in areas such as gardening, animal care, environmental awareness, and teamwork.
Rosebud Continuum’s inclusive approach to teaching and community engagement has been instrumental in empowering our students to become more confident and self-reliant.”
Rosebud is a place that welcomes people from all walks of life and of all skill levels.
The LYF volunteers have taught us just as much about being present and living in the moment, as we have taught them about working in the garden and simply enjoying nature.
We hope our partnership lasts for years to come!
